What hail does to shingles
A hailstone knocks granules loose and can crack the fiberglass mat underneath. The spot may not leak for months, but the shingle ages fast from there: granules are its sun protection. Inspectors press for a soft, bruise-like feel and mark hits in a test square to judge whether damage is widespread enough to matter.
- Random dark spots where granules are missing, with no pattern
- Shingles that feel soft or spongy under the hit
- Splits or cracks through the mat on larger hail
- Granules piling up at downspout outlets after the storm
Clues you can check from the ground
Dented gutters, downspouts and metal roof vents, spatter marks on fences, and damaged window screens all suggest hail was large enough to hurt shingles. None of these prove roof damage on their own, but together they are a good reason to have the roof itself checked before you decide about a claim.
What to do next
Get the roof inspected and photographed while the evidence is fresh, keep the storm date, and read our guide on insurance cover for roof replacement. Be careful with anyone who knocks on your door promising a free roof before they have even looked at yours.
