Class 4 impact-resistant shingles
Class 4 is the highest impact rating under the UL 2218 test, which drops steel balls to simulate hail. These shingles cost more than standard architectural shingles but resist the bruising and granule loss that shorten a roof's life in hail country. Some insurers offer premium discounts for Class 4 roofs, so ask your agent before you decide.
Standing seam metal
Metal reflects more solar heat than dark shingles, stands up well to hail dents compared with shingle bruising, and lasts two to three times as long. The trade-offs are higher upfront cost and noise some homeowners notice in heavy rain, which insulation and solid decking reduce. Our metal vs. shingles comparison goes deeper.
Tile, and what to avoid
Clay and concrete tile shrug off heat and last for decades, but the structure must be built or reinforced for the weight, and the underlayment beneath tile wears out long before the tile does. What to avoid in this climate: the cheapest 3-tab shingles on a home you plan to keep, and any material installed without ventilation improvements in a hot attic.
